British Waterways Makes Improvements To Alrewas Lock Landing
20 November 2008
British Waterways West Midlands has recently spent £180,000 on rebuilding Alrewas lock landing.
The vast improvements to the lock landing will help to alleviate congestion and provide more temporary mooring space for boaters waiting to go through the lock.
Several flooding incidents have occurred at the location due to the Trent and Mersey Canal passing through the River Trent Valley, which as a result, weakened the lock landing. British Waterways Geo-Technical team, based in Leeds designed the new lock landing to withstand any problems caused by flooding ensuring that the work met all Customer Safety Standards. The improvements have incorporated the installation of 65 metres of 3.6 metre long galvanised sheet piles and associated anchors to create an asset with a life expectancy of 50 years.
British Waterways, project manager, Lee Bradley said: “In partnership with Morrison Construction we have delivered a significant improvement to the lock landing, ahead of programme and the work has also come in below budget. This is real evidence of what West Midlands Waterways employees are capable of delivering.”
