Working In Partnership
British Waterways has a proven track record of successfully working with a wide range of partners in the private, public, government and voluntary sectors.
Private Partners
We work with private partners to maximise the earning potential of the waterways. Through creative Public Private Partnerships we earn income to reinvest in the waterways.
Our joint venture partnerships include:
- ISIS: property regeneration
- Easynet: telecommunications
- Waterside Pub Partnership: waterside pubs
Public Partners
Over the past decade, public funding partners such as the Millennium Commission and Heritage Lottery Fund have provided a massive boost to restoration and regeneration projects which previously looked impossible. In addition, Landfill Tax Credits, European funding, local authorities, and Regional Development Agencies have all made major contributions to supporting waterway renaissance.
Government Partners
As a public corporation, we are responsible to the UK government and the Scottish Executive to maintain and manage the waterways so that they fulfil their full economic, social and environment & heritage potential. Our sponsoring departments are the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs in England and Wales, and in Scotland, the Enterprise, Transport and Lifelong Learning Department. We also liaise closely with the Department for Economic Development and Transport in Wales.
Voluntary and Charity Partners
We work with a wide range of voluntary sector partners to find new ways to fund the waterways and generate interest in them. Our partners include The Waterways Trust, the Inland Waterways Association, The Wildlife Trusts and local canal, community, environment and heritage organisations.
